The direct answer
Start with the manual for the exact model. At ground level, remove loose dirt from the rungs, rails or stiles, feet, bumpers, and lock areas using only the cleaner and lubricant the manufacturer permits. Remove oil, grease, paint, mud, and anything else that can make a rung or foot slippery. If the ladder got wet, open it as instructed and let the telescoping sections dry completely before storage or use.
Then inspect the complete ladder: readable labels, straight rails, level rungs, secure fasteners, intact feet and top pads, normal lock movement, matching indicators, and smooth extension and retraction. Do this before each use—not only when the ladder feels sticky. OSHA's general-industry rule requires covered employers to inspect ladders before initial use in each work shift and more often when needed. Its construction rule requires periodic visible-defect inspection and inspection after an occurrence that could affect safe use.
Cleaning restores a clean mechanism; it does not repair a bent rail, cracked rung, unreliable lock, missing foot, unreadable instruction label, or damage from a fall, impact, heat, or chemical exposure. Those conditions call for removal from service and manufacturer-directed evaluation, repair, or replacement.
NIOSH identifies insufficient ladder inspection as one of five major ladder-fall causes and recommends regular inspection and maintenance. A telescoping ladder deserves special discipline because dust or moisture can affect close-fitting sliding sections, while every extended rung adds two lock points that must work as designed.

A calendar can help a business document periodic inspections, but it cannot replace the pre-use check. Frequency should rise with use and exposure. A ladder carried through dusty attics five times a day needs attention sooner than one stored dry for occasional indoor work.
How to clean a telescoping ladder
- Work unoccupied and at ground level. Keep hands clear of pinch zones and follow the model's extension and retraction order. Do not clean or troubleshoot while someone is on the ladder.
- Identify the exact instructions. Match the model number on the label to its manual. Cleaning products that are correct for one maker are not automatically safe for another lock design, plastic, rubber, coating, or adhesive.
- Remove dry grit first. Wipe or brush loose dust, sand, drywall powder, insulation debris, and grit away from the exposed telescoping surfaces and joints. Do not drive contamination deeper with high-pressure air or an improvised spray.
- Clean the contact surfaces. Wipe rungs, rails, feet, and top pads until they are free of oil, grease, wet leaves, paint, and other slipping hazards. OSHA's construction rule specifically requires ladders to be maintained free of oil, grease, and other slipping hazards.
- Use only the approved product. Xtend+Climb's published maintenance sheet tells owners of its telescoping ladders to clean the aluminum stiles, apply a dry silicone spray where specified, and not use a petroleum-based spray because it can clog the internal locking mechanism. That is a brand instruction—not a universal recipe. If your maker does not authorize a lubricant, do not invent one.
- Dry before storage or use. If water entered the telescoping mechanism, follow the maker's drying procedure. Xtend+Climb directs users to fully extend the ladder and let it dry in a non-humid area. Never seal a damp ladder in a carry bag or force a water-bound section.
- Operate and inspect. After cleaning and drying, extend and retract the ladder exactly as instructed. Both sides of each required lock should engage, indicators should agree, and rungs should sit level and parallel. Unusual resistance, delayed engagement, uneven movement, or a hard drop is a stop signal.
Do not reach for general-purpose oil, petroleum spray, wax, abrasive pads, pressure washing, solvents, or compressed air unless the exact manufacturer instructs you to. Do not drill, file, bend, tape, or dismantle a safety mechanism to make it move.
The complete inspection
Labels and identity
Confirm the model, duty rating, material, standing limit, warnings, and operating labels are present and readable. Without them, the next user cannot verify the ladder's limits or correct sequence. Keep proof of purchase and the current manual with the equipment record if the ladder is used for work.
Rails, stiles, and rungs
Look and feel for bends, splits, cracks, deep dents, sharp edges, corrosion, worn sliding surfaces, and a rung that is loose or no longer parallel. Sight down each rail from both ends. A section that was forced, dropped, or struck can be out of line even if the ladder still collapses.
Locks and indicators
At the permitted setup height, check the left and right lock at every extended rung. Indicators should show the model's secured state, the rung should be seated as the instructions show, and normal hand operation should not require improvised force. Feet, pads, fasteners, and strap
Both feet should be present, clean, secure, and able to contact the surface as designed. Check top bumpers or pads, visible screws or rivets, end caps, and the carry strap. A strap is for transport and storage; it does not compensate for a damaged locking section. Replace wear parts only through the manufacturer's approved parts and service route.
Movement and setup
Extend and retract every permitted section while the ladder is unoccupied. Watch for a lock that releases on one side first, a rung that cocks sideways, a section that free-falls, or a rail that binds. Finish by checking both feet on firm, level, clean ground and both upper rails equally supported at the instructed angle.

For covered work, OSHA requires a defective portable ladder to be tagged or otherwise clearly marked and withdrawn from service until repaired; repairs must restore the ladder to its original design criteria. The practical home rule is the same: make it impossible for another person to mistake a suspect ladder for a ready one.
