The direct answer
You can use a ladder where the two planned foot locations are at different elevations only when the final setup is supported, stable, and level under the ladder's own instructions. The clean options are to move to naturally level, firm ground; choose a ladder with manufacturer-installed adjustable legs; or fit a manufacturer-approved leveler to an explicitly compatible ladder.
Do not climb with one rail lower than the other, one foot hovering, or the ladder rocking between support points. Do not stack scraps, bricks, rocks, boxes, or loose boards under a foot. If a designed leveling system cannot make the rungs level while every shoe bears fully on a firm surface, change the location or access method.
Measure the height difference before choosing equipment, adjust only while the ladder is unoccupied, confirm every lock and foot, and reject the setup if the ground can slide, sink, crumble, or exceed the exact leveler's instructions.
OSHA's general-industry rule for covered workplaces requires portable ladders to be used only on stable and level surfaces unless they are secured or stabilized against accidental displacement. It separately prohibits placing ladders on boxes, barrels, or other unstable bases to gain height. Home projects may fall outside that rule, but the same placement test is a sensible minimum.
Uneven is a measurement; unstable is a stop signal
A leveler changes the effective length of one or both ladder rails. It does not strengthen the soil underneath, remove oil from concrete, freeze mud, or stop landscaping rock from rolling. Separate the difference in elevation from the quality of the bearing surface before treating an accessory as the answer.

Test the exact foot locations, not the general appearance of the yard. Turf can hide sprinkler boxes, animal holes, roots, wet clay, and backfilled trenches. Hardscape can hide a drain pitch that leaves a ladder visibly out of level. Press and inspect the area before bringing the ladder into position, then check again after the ladder is loaded only as the manufacturer directs.
Measure the rail-to-rail height difference
Place a straight board or rigid level across the two proposed foot locations without placing the ladder. Hold it level, then measure the vertical gap at the low end. That gap is the approximate correction the leveler must provide. It is more useful than describing a yard as “a little sloped.”
Example: a 2-inch difference across 24 inches
If the low foot location is 2 inches below the high location and the horizontal spacing is 24 inches, the grade is 2 ÷ 24 = 0.083, or about 8.3%. The corresponding cross-slope angle is about 4.8 degrees. The important buying number is still the 2-inch vertical difference, because manufacturers publish leveler travel in inches.
Do not treat a published 7- or 8½-inch adjustment range as permission to use every surface below that number. The exact ladder width, shoe position, mode, leveler installation, contact area, soil, and instructions still control. Leave adjustment margin rather than planning at a mechanism's published limit.
Measure again in the real ladder position
A leaning ladder's feet may move several feet outward to achieve the correct pitch, landing on a different part of the grade. A self-supporting ladder opens to a particular footprint. Mark all intended foot positions, check each one for firm bearing, and measure the cross-slope across the actual rails—not across the most convenient nearby patch.
Side-to-side level does not set the 4-to-1 angle
For an extension or straight ladder, a leveler addresses the rail-to-rail difference. The ladder still needs its correct distance from the upper support. The familiar 4-to-1 starting point places the base about 1 foot out for every 4 feet of working ladder length between the feet and upper support. Suppose the working ladder length is 16 feet, calling for about 4 feet of setback, while the left foot location is 2 inches lower than the right. A compatible leveler may correct the 2-inch side-to-side difference. It does not remove the separate 4-foot setback check, make a weak upper contact acceptable, or supply the extra rail length required above an upper landing.
For a self-supporting or multi-position ladder, use only an open position shown on the exact label. The rungs or steps must finish level, every hinge and spreader or rail lock must engage, and every foot must bear fully. Never create a “stair setup” by partly closing an ordinary stepladder or resting one pair of feet on a loose platform.
Five shortcuts to reject
- Loose shims. A scrap of plywood, brick, paver, rock, bucket, or stacked block can shift, split, tilt, or eject under load. It is not a substitute for an approved leveling system.
- Digging one foot in without a site plan. Removing soil can create a soft pocket, expose utilities or irrigation, and leave poor drainage. Relocate instead of redesigning the ground casually.
- Leveling while occupied. Descend before touching a leveler, moving a foot, changing the ladder length, or converting a multi-position ladder.
- Mixing brands or models. A kit that physically touches the rail is not necessarily compatible. Confirm the full ladder series, length, material, hardware, instructions, and duty-rating effect.
- Treating a tie-off as a cure-all. Securing against displacement is important where required, but it does not excuse sideways rungs, incomplete shoe contact, incorrect angle, damaged hardware, or an unapproved configuration.
Also inspect the leveling mechanism itself. Werner's current LevelSafe safety page calls for checking it for damage, unlocking both handles to adjust, confirming the ladder is level, and locking the handles before climbing, moving, or transporting. The on-product labels and the manual supplied with the exact equipment remain the controlling instructions.

Who it fits: The user needs a complete multi-position ladder rather than a retrofit kit, the measured task fits the Model 17's exact label, and its built-in Ratchet levelers, 35-pound published weight, and 375-pound rating fit the job and carrier.
Who should skip it: Work where aluminum could contact exposed energized equipment, users who need only a simple extension-ladder accessory, any load or reach outside the label, or ground that cannot provide firm full-foot bearing.

Retrofit path: Werner says its PK100 LevelSafe Pro automatically levels up to 8½ inches, offers manual micro-adjustment, requires no ladder cutting, and fits only the extension-ladder series listed on its current page. That is a targeted choice for an owner whose compatible ladder, intended mode, capacity, and condition already fit.
Integrated path: Little Giant's current selected Leveler Model 17 record lists built-in Ratchet levelers with more than 7 inches of adjustment, aluminum construction, 35-pound product weight, and a Type IAA 375-pound rating. It is a full multi-position ladder purchase, not a universal add-on for a ladder you already own.
The uneven-ground setup checklist
- Inspect the job for electricity, traffic, doors, overhead hazards, and a safer naturally level location.
- Mark every actual foot position for the ladder's intended open or leaning configuration.
- Reject mud, loose fill, ice, oil, voids, edges, and any surface that can sink, roll, or slide.
- Measure the vertical difference between the two rail positions while the ladder is absent.
- Confirm the exact integrated system or retrofit kit is approved for the ladder, mode, and measured difference.
- Inspect the ladder, feet, levelers, locks, hinges, labels, fasteners, and upper support.
- Adjust while unoccupied; never stand on a ladder while moving or changing a leveler.
- Confirm rungs are level, both shoes bear fully, all handles and locks are engaged, and the ladder does not rock.
- For a leaning ladder, separately verify the setup angle, upper support, overlap, standing limit, and any securing requirement.
- Stop if the equipment cannot produce a stable, level, label-compliant setup with adjustment margin.
Bottom line: do not solve uneven ground with whatever is in the truck. Start with firm bearing, measure the side-to-side difference, and use only a purpose-designed ladder or compatible leveler that can finish within its instructions. If the ground remains soft, slippery, unsupported, or beyond the equipment's range, the correct ladder decision is a different location or access method.
